October 31, 2018

The story of L. E. Travis & Sons, Inc. is coming to a close.  After having grown up in the business starting at age 6, I have finally decided that there might be something else to life other than “beautifying” and “protecting from the elements” man-made structures throughout South Central Texas.

The legacy of the Travis family in the paint contracting business started in 1886 with my great-grandfather, J. A. Travis.  He started his company in Wharton, Texas, and later moved to Bryan, finally settling in San Marcos.  In 1927, my grandfather began contracting in San Antonio under the name L. E. Travis.  Years later, the “& Sons” was added, and in 1959 it was incorporated and continued under the leadership of my father, L. E. Travis, Jr.  I joined the company fulltime in 1971 and assumed leadership in 1977.  Throughout the years, L. E. Travis & Sons, Inc. has operated upon the firm foundations of experience and pride with a goal of leaving its customers with the old-fashioned feeling of confidence and quality.

Even though this branch of the Travis connection with painting is coming to a close, please know that Texans needing these services can rest easy knowing that the best is yet to come.  My nephews are continuing the tradition and are the 5th generation.  Nephew John Travis owns and operates J. E. Travis Painting, Inc., and nephew Carlton Catalani owns and operates Travis Industries, Inc.  Both of these fine young men have built successful enterprises that can handle most any facet of painting/coating requirements.

I must admit that this closing has been a most difficult and, at times, emotional decision for me.  But I know that God has a plan for me, and a future.  My prayer is that my future might initially involve you.  Over the last 47 years of my full time involvement, L. E. Travis & Sons, Inc. has acquired/ accumulated a host of treasures just waiting for your discovery.  Whether you need a truck, forklift, ladder, paint sprayer, or office furniture/equipment/supplies/decorations, or anything in between, we will have it all available in our giant retirement/liquidation auction on December 1st.  All this “stuff” has worked well for me; it is time for it to work well for you.  I have hooked up with professional auctioneer John Sisk, and he and his team have been through, and laid hands on, every single treasure in my office/shop.  I believe this will be an event that you won’t want to miss.

Before I close, I want to take this opportunity to thank all my employees through the years with whom I have had the honor to work alongside, to all the customers who have entrusted their properties/projects to our workmanship, to all the suppliers who furnished us with quality products and equipment, to all my competitors who have kept me honest, to all my colleagues with whom I have worked alongside for the betterment of the industry, and to my family who may, at times, have had to take a backseat to the demands of being a small contractor from South Texas.

As far as L. E. Travis & Sons, Inc. is concerned, I am pleased with the efforts expended and the results attained through the years.  As far as my personal contracting career, all I can say is that I gave it my best shot and I finished my race.  It is now time for me to look forward to what lies ahead and to press into that which God will set before me.

May God richly bless all of you (and especially those that come to the auction) in the days ahead.

Ed Travis, III
